Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for our How To guides? Find them here

  • We’re a library, just like those you’ve grown up with. We lend books to our members (we have different membership options available here), and our members read, return the books and pick up some new ones!

  • We’re located at Jaffery Sports Club on Naushad Merali Drive in Lavington. We’re right next to the kids play area at the back!

If you pass by and find we’re closed, sign-ups, book browsing & reservations can all also be done online!

We had a library at 209 State House, but this closed in December 2025 as the landlord had new plans for the space.

We’re actively looking for other spaces that would work for Pocket Libraries, so if you come across any, give us a shout!

  • Our Jaffery’s branch is open weekdays from noon to 7pm and weekends from 10am to 7pm!

  • There are two ways you can join our library:

    1. Fill in our online membership form here. This will automatically send you the next steps

    2. You can call in to the physical libraries. We will be on hand to help you get set up

Note, while we do have a kids membership tier, any members under the age of 18 years require a parent or guardian to assist with the application by acting as a guarantor.

    1. Once you’ve signed up, you can log in to our online portal - app.pocketlibraries.org, where you can browse our catalogue, see what’s available to borrow (and what’s currently in circulation) and place your own holds

    2. We will then be in touch when any holds you have placed are available, and you can come pick up the books from the library.

    3. Adults on the Casual Reader tier, and kids on the Teens & Tweens tier can borrow one book at a time, but can return it for another as many times as they like for the duration of the membership. Adults on the Hardcore Bookies and kids on the Toddlers, and Double Trouble tiers can borrow two books at a time. There is no separate charge for borrowing. Items are loaned for 2 weeks and can be renewed once.

  • Books can be returned to the library. We will check it back in for you, and you can borrow your next book

  • You can renew a loan (for an additional week) if:
    a. It’s not been overdue for more than 1 week (i.e. we allow a total of 3 weeks, including the renewal)
    b. You haven’t renewed it previously (i.e. we allow one renewal per check-out)

    To renew, you can either:

    1. Renew it yourself on our portal - app.pocketlibraries.org, or

    2. Get in touch with us through any of our channels

  • Readers are some of the most trustworthy people on the planet. But sometimes accidents happen. Things go missing. We charge a small deposit just to cover the cost of a book replacement. It is completely refundable if you decide to no longer be a member (though we hope it never comes to that!)

  • We have a small, voluntary late fee - 20/- for every day it’s late. This starts coming into effect a week after the book was due (i.e. 3 weeks after it was borrowed) so you have a little bit of a grace period. You’ll also get automated reminders via text, before and after the due date, just so you don’t forget!

The fee is completely voluntary - you can pay what you feel is far (whether it’s more or less than the suggestion), or not at all.

The main reason it’s important to return books on time is so that other people can use them.

  • No you don't need to login to search the library catalogue. You will need to log in if you want to

    1. Place a reservation
    2. See your check-out history and review books
    3. See your membership details

  • This is done through our Library Portal. We have a whole how to section here to guide you through the process of browsing, booking, and returning a book.

  • Don’t worry about it - if you have forgotten your password and we have a record of your email address, we can send you an email containing your password. Just hit Forgot Password on the login page of the portal

  • Not a problem at all! If you can't find the item you are looking for in our collection and think it would be useful to have in the Library, you can make a request on our home page - here. Depending on it’s availability, we will try have the book with us in the shortest time possible! You will need to be a member for this though.

  • Yes, of course! Though we may not be able to accept each and every one, some of your books may be another members next favourite read! Email us: hello@pocketlibraries.org, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

  • Our new Web App lets you do a bunch of library related stuff online! Browse the catalogue, reserve books, view your loans, renew, and manage your membership all through the app. You can also RSVP for events, browse our merch store and keep up to date with everything Pocket Libraries!

  • You can install the web app on your device by opening it in your browser and choosing ‘Install’ (or ‘Add to Home Screen’ on mobile) from your browser menu. This gives you an app-like experience, including notifications (if you enable them) without downloading from an app store.
